 Bert Raphael graduated from Osgoode Hall Law Scholl with an LLB in 1960 and in the same year was called to the Bar on Ontario. He was called to the Bar of Alberta in 1988. He was appointed a Queen’s Counsel in 1975 and was grandfathered as a Certified Specialist in Civil Litigation. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from McMaster University and was twice honoured by the Law Society of Upper Canada. In 1992, he was awarded the Law Society Medal for Significant Contribution to the Profession and in 1997, was awarded the Law Society Award of Merit for Meritorious Community Service.
Bert Raphael has acted for almost all major insurers in Ontario. In addition, Bert was Chairman of the Insurance Committee of the Ontario Task Force on Insurance and was Advisor to the Commissioner, the Inquiry into Motor Vehicles Accident Compensation in Ontario, 1987-1988. He has also served as a Director and Chairman of the Insurance Committee of the Advocates’ Society, was an Executive Member of the Committee for FAIR Action in Insurance Reform. He has been a panelist on insurance law programs sponsored by the Canadian Bar Association and has been a special lecturer to various insurance companies, the Claims Managers’ Association of Canada and the Ontario Insurance Adjusters’ Association. Bert has also authored several articles for professional publications on various aspects of motor vehicle insurance law. Bert has been a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers since 1985.
In recognition of his stature as an advocated, Bert Raphael was elected President of the Advocates’ Society in 1985. He serves as President of the Jewish Civil Rights Educational Foundation of Canada, and has been chairman, director or officer of numerous other organizations, including the Canadian Lawyers and Jurists for World Jewry, the State of Israel Bonds Legal Division, the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists, the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada, the Canadian Bar Association, t he medico-Legal Society of Toronto, the North York Branson Hospital and the Reena Foundation for which he is Honorary Legal Counsel.
Bert Raphael has also been a chairman, panelist, and lecturer at various international symposiums, including Advocates’ Society conferences in Israel, Ireland, Kenya, San Francisco, New York, Quebec, Italy, Hungary and China. He was a panelist at the 1987 Seventh international Congress of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists, Jerusalem, and a lecturer at the 1989 conference of the International Foundation for Survival and Development of Humanity, Moscow.
Bert has been married to his wife Marilyn since 1955. Together they have three children, five grandchildren and six honorary grandchildren.
